Mr Calder was very kind to one old boy, even though occasionally he had to give him (deservedly)what are laughingly referred to as six of the best. As a violinist myself in a school oriented towards science it was good to have the Headmaster on side. In the sixth he gave me all his old books regarding violins and playing. I have very happy memories of a Gentleman headmaster.

Well! One never ceases to be amazed.
(From the Soham Grammarians records)

Violin lessons were taught by Mr. R. B. Calder (later Headmaster of Mundella School, Nottingham).
