KEN WHYLD was the greatest chess historian of his and perhaps of any generation, having made an indelible mark with the monumental Oxford Companion to Chess (1984), which he wrote with David Hooper. The outstanding one-volume encyclopaedia of chess is renowned for its accuracy, its elegant style and its humour, and includes glossaries in Russian, Magyar and Western European languages.
